The Maya student edition is now an affordable and popular option among students and educational institutions that want to learn and teach this leading 3D software for animation, design, and visual effects. Since its acquisition by Autodesk there have been a number of changes to the Maya Student Edition. First, the price has dropped dramatically and there are a couple of licensing options - a 14-month license for just under $200 and a perpetual license just shy of $400. The phasing out of the free Maya PLE (Personal Learning Edition) and replacement by a 30-day trial demo has angered some, particularly hobbyists who don't really have access to the student edition. However, it has resulted in Autodesk making available the Maya Student Edition Superpack. The Maya Student Edition Superpack is a special bundle of student versions of other high-end softwares owned by Autodesk, and includes the following: Maya Unlimited - the full version of the Maya software with all the modules that are available in the commercial version:
-Motionbuilder - animation software tool
-Mudbox - modeling tool (especially organic modeling)
-Toxik - compositing tool
Note: The extra software in the Maya Student Edition Superpack are PC-based and will not work on a Mac. The Maya Unlimited Student Edition is available for PC and Mac though.
These Superpack softwares are all fully working versions with NO restrictions, apart from the obvious one that they are for educational use only and you can't make money from them.
There's also no watermark in the images produced by the Maya student edition, which is a great change from previous versions as that improves the presentation of your work when you put it on your showreel. It also uses the same file format as the commercial version.
All in all the Maya Student Edition Superpack is pretty much a complete suite of tools to produce professional animation and visual effects. While Maya is more widely used in the industry than the other 3 pieces of software, it can be a good idea to learn the basics of them so it'll look great on your resume when you apply for a job.
