Most people when writing utilize a word processor program. These programs are commonly utilized and can be acquired at no charge. Common variations of these programs include Word for Windows, Microsoft Office, Open Office and Word Perfect. Using any of these programs makes conversion of document files to text files simple and easy. Each of the word processing programs has unique abilities and idiosyncrasies. However all of the programs have the ability to save documents in a format other than the format that is considered "standard" for that program. One of the optional methods of saving a document is in a text format. Once a document is created it must be saved for later retrieval or use. Through the use of the word processing program, any word processing program can open a document, saved in almost any format. For some applications the document must be saved in a text format. The text format (.txt) is what is utilized in the Notepad application that is supplied by Microsoft in Windows. After a document is created in the Windows environment, it must be saved. To save the document in the text (.txt) format, click on "File" then "Save As". To save the file, a name must be entered. In a window below where the name of the file is provided there is a window labeled "Save As Type". Clicking on this window will open a list of options as to format type. Clicking on "Text" and then save will save the document in text format. If the format of an existing document needs to be changed, the process is just as simple. Open the document that needs to be changed in the word processing program. Then simply save the document or file in the text format as if it were a newly created document or file. When a document is saved in the Text (.txt) format there may be some formatting changes that must be made since the Text format is a very simple word processing program. However if the document or file is simply words with little formatting, the document should be saved in the proper manner. Converting a file in the Document (.doc) format to a Text (.txt) format is simple and has been provided for by all the developers of word processing programs.
